China has institutionalized support for what it calls "niche and endangered disciplines" — traditional humanities fields with small research communities that preserve culturally significant knowledge at risk of being lost. The category includes oracle bone studies, Dunhuang studies, bamboo and wooden slip studies, ancient script studies, ancient astronomy and calendrical studies, ethnic writing systems, and research on Chinese texts preserved overseas.
The term "lengmen juexue" combines "lengmen" (niche disciplines with limited scholarly attention and slow output) and "juexue" (endangered disciplines of exceptional cultural value that may vanish as senior experts retire). A discipline must meet both criteria to qualify.
State attention grew after a 2016 speech by President Xi Jinping urging greater focus on marginal disciplines with high heritage value. In 2018, the National Social Science Fund of China created a dedicated funding stream, followed by initiatives from the Ministry of Education and the Chinese Academy of History. Individual projects receive about 350,000 yuan ($52,000) and collaborative projects about 800,000 yuan, placing them on par with other major fund programs.
These fields address foundational questions: how oracle bone inscriptions were written, how the "Book of Documents" was transmitted, how ancient calendars organized agriculture and authority, and what the Dunhuang Library Cave reveals about cultural exchange. They also underpin cultural continuity by maintaining the ability to read and interpret vast heritage collections.
The category has expanded from an initial core of script and manuscript studies to include ancient science and technology history, frontier history and geography, and research on exchanges between China and other civilizations. Disciplines are now grouped into four broad areas: ancient scripts and extinct languages; traditional classics and endangered classical studies; ancient specialized histories and niche skills; and frontier and cross-civilizational research.
State funding has already yielded major publications, such as the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' "Heroic Epic and Oral Tradition" and "Translations of Sanskrit Literature." Digital tools for text collation, document digitization, and historical script recognition are also improving research efficiency.
The primary obstacle remains time, not money. Mastering a field like early Chinese astronomy requires expertise in ancient calendrical systems, script decipherment, and deep historical knowledge — training that can take decades. After the deaths of leading scholars such as Bo Shuren (1934–1997), Xi Zezong (1927–2008), and Chen Meidong (1942–2008), the field has weakened, with few young researchers able to replace them.
Current research evaluation systems reward speed and measurable output, which clashes with the slow pace of these disciplines. Public awareness is low, and few students commit to careers requiring decades of patient study. Sustained progress depends on tailored training and evaluation mechanisms that accommodate long-term scholarship.
