Researchers are testing a new approach to breast augmentation that combines a patient's own fat with temporary, dissolvable scaffolds shaped like bra cups. The technique aims to improve the survival rate of transferred fat tissue, which often dies or forms cysts when injected without structural support.

In conventional fat grafting, fat is removed from one part of the body by liposuction and injected into the breast. Without a scaffold, the transplanted fat cells frequently fail to develop an adequate blood supply, leading to unpredictable volume retention and complications such as oil cysts or calcifications.

The experimental scaffolds are designed to hold the injected fat in a defined shape while the tissue integrates and builds its own vascular network. Once the fat has established a blood supply, the scaffold material dissolves and is absorbed by the body, leaving only the living tissue.

Early laboratory work suggests the scaffolds can maintain the desired breast contour during the critical healing period. Researchers say the method could eventually offer a more natural look and feel than silicone implants, with fewer long-term risks such as capsular contracture or implant rupture.

The approach remains in the research phase and has not yet been tested in human clinical trials. Key questions include the optimal scaffold degradation rate, the volume of fat that can be reliably sustained, and the incidence of any immune response to the scaffold material.

If proven safe and effective in future studies, the technique could provide an alternative for patients seeking reconstruction after mastectomy or cosmetic augmentation without permanent foreign materials.

Current standard options include silicone or saline implants and traditional fat grafting without scaffolds, each with distinct complication profiles. The scaffold method attempts to address the main limitation of standard fat grafting — low and variable graft survival.

Further preclinical development and regulatory review will be required before any clinical application can be considered.
