England on track to eliminate hepatitis C as treatment targets met

England is on course to become one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C, according to new NHS England figures. The health service has already met the World Health Organization target of treating 80% of known cases, with more than 100,000 people diagnosed and treated since 2015.

Deaths from the virus have fallen by 36% over the last decade, though the WHO goal of a 65% reduction by 2030 has not yet been reached. Current estimates suggest around 50,200 adults in England are living with hepatitis C, with 84.6% diagnosed — just below the 90% target.

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus that can cause serious liver damage if left untreated. It often presents no symptoms for years, meaning many people remain unaware they are infected. Antiviral tablets taken for 8 to 12 weeks can cure more than 95% of cases.

NHS England has expanded testing through A&E blood tests, GP registration screening, and free at-home self-testing kits. These initiatives have helped identify previously undiagnosed cases, particularly among people who may have been exposed through medical or dental procedures abroad before 1991.

Adults born in Ukraine, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Albania, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Czechia, or Slovakia are being specifically encouraged to order free, confidential home-testing kits without needing to see a GP.

Paul Eatwell, 65, from Blackburn, was diagnosed after a routine blood test and completed treatment. He said he had felt no symptoms and was initially disbelief at the diagnosis, but the medical support he received made a significant difference.

Prof Frankie Swords, NHS national medical director, said England is leading the world in the elimination effort and is on course to beat the WHO 2030 target. The Hepatitis C Trust described the progress as being "on the cusp" of one of the most significant public health achievements in the country's history.

The NHS remains committed to finding and treating everyone who needs support, with continued momentum needed to reach the remaining undiagnosed population and achieve the mortality reduction target.
