Global installed solar power capacity has exceeded 3 terawatts, according to data from BloombergNEF (BNEF) cited in a CleanTechnica report published August 18, 2026.

The milestone marks a rapid acceleration: the world reached 1 terawatt around 2022, added a second terawatt within a few years, and moved from 2 to 3 terawatts in under two years.

China continues to account for a large share of growth, but BNEF highlights a broadening geographic spread, with developing nations now adopting solar at a fast pace.

Countries such as Pakistan, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Cuba are among those rapidly expanding installations.

The number of nations with at least 1 gigawatt of installed solar has risen from 42 in 2020 to 74 currently.

BNEF projects total capacity could reach 9 terawatts by 2036, with developing countries expected to contribute more than 25% of that total while the share from wealthy nations falls to around 20%.

The figures reflect installed capacity; actual electricity generation varies with sunlight, system performance, and grid integration.
