Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has launched a vocational cybersecurity program in collaboration with Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University (DBRAU), Agra, and the Vivekanand Incubation Foundation (VIF). The initiative aims to reach over 300,000 students across more than 570 affiliated colleges.
The curriculum will be delivered in Hindi to reduce language barriers for students in semi-urban and rural areas. IIT Kanpur's C3iHub will design and deliver the course content, drawing on the institute's research and training expertise in cybersecurity. VIF will provide the administrative and technical infrastructure needed to deploy the courses at scale.
The program covers cybercrime and cyber hygiene, social media threats, identity theft, personal data leaks, online safety for women and children, the dark web, cyber terrorism, and illegal activities. Instruction includes quizzes, workshops, and course feedback supported by customized virtual labs that provide practical, real-world experience.
Alongside the vocational course, DBRAU will establish a dedicated Cybersecurity Counselling Cell (CCC). The cell is intended to mitigate cybercrime incidents and provide prevention guidance and support for students.
The collaboration marks an effort to expand technical education access beyond English-medium instruction. By using Hindi as the medium of instruction, the program addresses a structural barrier that has limited participation in cybersecurity training for students outside major urban centers.
Organizers say the vocational format is designed to equip students with essential knowledge and practical skills rather than academic credentials alone. The virtual lab component aims to give learners hands-on experience with security scenarios they may encounter in personal or professional contexts.
The program's scale, covering more than 570 colleges, represents one of the larger coordinated cybersecurity education efforts in the region. Its focus on vernacular delivery and practical labs distinguishes it from conventional university-level courses typically offered in English.
No independent evaluation of learning outcomes or employment impact has been published. The program's long-term effectiveness will depend on sustained infrastructure support, instructor capacity, and student engagement across the diverse college network.
