Illustrator Turns Father's Expired Passport Into Painted Memory Capsule

Copenhagen-based illustrator and designer Radhika Chitalia has transformed her late father's expired passport into a painted memory capsule. After her father passed away, the document remained stored away for years before Chitalia decided to paint over each page using gouache.

The artist worked directly on top of existing visas, immigration stamps, and blank pages. She describes the process as a way to address grief while symbolically completing the travels her father had planned for retirement but never undertook.

Chitalia notes that her father loved to travel and had intended to explore the world with her mother during retirement. The passport already contained numerous stamps from his earlier journeys, making it what she calls a personal time capsule of a bygone era of paper-based travel documentation.

The project began spontaneously and evolved into an exploration of memory, loss, and unrealized journeys. Chitalia views the passport as an object already imbued with her father's history, with her paintings adding a new narrative layer.

Beyond the passport, Chitalia has also painted on other found documents that belonged to her father. She shares progress on this ongoing work through her Instagram account and maintains a portfolio on Behance.

The artist's broader practice centers on connections, drawing from psychology, emotions, and Indian folk traditions. Her work often incorporates natural pigments and aims to bring humanity into product design and illustration.

Physical passports with adhered paper visas and ink stamps are becoming increasingly rare as travel documentation shifts to digital formats. Chitalia's project preserves both a personal family artifact and a record of this historical method of tracking international movement.

The painted passport functions as a posthumous collaboration between father and daughter, converting a bureaucratic document into a unique artistic record of one person's life and travels.
