Stanford University received two awards. One project, led by Somil Bansal, will create a safety framework for avionics that incorporate machine learning, ensuring that safety assurances are continuously reinforced throughout the system's operational life. The research seeks to establish a pathway for certifying AI-enabled avionics in the national airspace.
A second Stanford effort, led by Juan Alonso, will build a high-fidelity simulation framework to design low-noise flight trajectories for urban air mobility aircraft. The model will integrate realistic urban sound-propagation physics to reduce community noise exposure from future small aircraft operating over populated areas.
Virginia Tech, under Darshan Sarojini, will pursue a three-year project that combines model-based systems engineering, multidisciplinary design optimization, and high-dimensional uncertainty quantification. The goal is to produce safer, faster, and more efficient aircraft design processes that cut costly late-stage redesigns.
NASA officials said the initiative develops the U.S. aeronautics workforce while generating findings that support commercial high-speed flight, advanced air mobility, and modernized air traffic management. Since its inception more than a decade ago, the program has emphasized collaborative, student-driven research aligned with the agency's strategic aeronautics objectives.
