Phaidon will release "Great Women Photographers" on October 14, 2026, the fourth volume in its series on influential women artists following books on painters, sculptors, and artists broadly.
The book spans nearly 200 years of photography history and includes more than 250 women photographers from 68 countries, organized alphabetically by name.
Each entry pairs recently commissioned texts by leading scholars with iconic images from the featured artists, covering genres from photojournalism and editorial portraiture to cameraless images and conceptual landscapes.
Featured artists include Atong Atem, Alex Prager, Carolle Bénitah, Simryn Gill, Gohar Dashti, and Pushpamala N., representing diverse geographic and stylistic approaches.
In the introduction, Fiona Rogers writes that continued documentation and celebration of women's photographic practice is essential if greatness has long been defined by visibility and remembrance.
The publisher describes the volume as "a new lens on the world, inviting readers to discover, engage with, and be inspired by the work of some of the world's greatest image-makers."
