Europe experienced its hottest June on record in 2026, accompanied by a severe drought that lowered river levels across the continent. The extreme conditions strained the electricity system just as cooling demand surged, with Italy's power demand jumping 28 percent and France's rising 14 percent in late June.
Wind generation dropped by half in the United Kingdom during June due to heat-induced low wind speeds. Low river levels and warm water forced reductions at thermal plants that rely on water for cooling. In the U.K., five gas plants cut a combined 2.5 gigawatts of output. France lost 18 percent of its nuclear capacity in mid-July because river water was too warm to meet discharge temperature limits that protect aquatic life.
Hydropower production fell to its lowest July level in a decade. Electricity and natural gas prices spiked in evening hours, reaching their highest levels since the 2022-2023 winter gas crisis.
Solar panels, however, produced 17 percent more power than normal during the heat waves, according to energy think tank Ember. Clear, sunny conditions that accompany heat waves are optimal for solar generation, and output peaked alongside afternoon cooling demand.
Battery storage systems helped deliver solar power into the evening, when temperatures remained high and air conditioning use stayed elevated. SolarPower Europe CEO Walburga Hemetsberger said battery storage is becoming a critical part of the energy transition for this reason.
Only about 23 percent of European households currently have access to or use air conditioning, compared to 90 percent in the United States, suggesting cooling demand will grow significantly. France's state-owned utility plans to spend over $10 billion over 15 years to adapt nuclear and hydropower plants to warmer temperatures and lower water availability.
Solar and battery installations have been expanding rapidly across Europe, with 36 gigawatt-hours of battery storage added in 2025, a 48 percent increase over the previous year. Battery installations marked their 12th consecutive year of growth.
Ember analyst Beatrice Petrovich said extreme price spikes during heat waves signal a need for regulatory changes to increase power system flexibility and remove barriers to energy storage deployment.
