Researchers have mapped the overlap between surf breaks and marine biodiversity hotspots along the coastlines of Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, and Senegal. The study, published in the journal Conservation Letters, analyzed global datasets on wave quality and the distribution of critical habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests.
The analysis revealed that 62 percent of the 1,230 surf breaks identified in the region fall within five kilometers of a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA). KBAs are sites identified by international conservation bodies as contributing significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity.
Lead author Dan Reineman of California State University Channel Islands said the proximity creates a strategic opportunity. Protecting the coastal ecosystems that create and maintain surf breaks — such as reefs and sandbars — would simultaneously safeguard the habitat for marine species.
The study highlights that many of these overlapping zones currently lack formal protection. The authors argue that establishing surf-protected areas, a conservation model already tested in countries like Peru and Costa Rica, could leverage the economic value of surf tourism to fund marine stewardship.
Surf tourism generates significant revenue globally, yet the economic benefits rarely flow directly into habitat protection in developing nations. By formally linking surf break preservation to biodiversity targets, the researchers propose a mechanism to align the interests of the surfing community, local economies, and international conservation goals.
The mapping also identified specific priority sites where high-quality waves coincide with irreplaceable biodiversity and high human pressure. These locations represent the most urgent candidates for the proposed dual-protection strategy.
The researchers caution that surf-protected areas are not a substitute for comprehensive marine spatial planning. They emphasize that effective management requires addressing threats like overfishing, pollution, and coastal development that degrade the underlying ecosystems.
The study contributes to a growing body of research quantifying the overlap between recreational assets and ecological value. The authors suggest the methodology could be applied to other coastlines worldwide to identify similar win-win conservation opportunities.
