On August 12, 2026, the Moon's shadow traced a narrow path across the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal, and northern Spain, creating a total solar eclipse.

Observers needed clear skies to witness the event, but cloud cover threatened visibility along much of the path.

Photographer Aditya Madhavan circumvented the weather by traveling by sea and landing near Rype Fjord on Greenland's east coast at coordinates 71.07055°N, 27.71252°W.

The image was captured at 17:33:26 UTC, near the initial reach of clearing skies along the path of totality.

This timing suggests the photograph may be one of the first unobstructed views of the totally eclipsed Sun during this event.

Through a break in the clouds, the image records a diamond ring effect and the solar corona emerging near the moment totality began.

The photograph was featured as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day on August 14, 2026, with credit to Madhavan and editorial oversight by Jerry Bonnell, Cecilia Chirenti, Robert Nemiroff, and Keighley Rockcliffe.

The eclipse track continued southeast across Iceland and the Atlantic before reaching the Iberian Peninsula.
