French energy company TotalEnergies has inaugurated the Hydra Project in South Africa's Northern Cape province, marking the largest hybrid renewable energy and storage facility on the African continent. The project integrates a 216-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant with a 500 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system.

Developed in partnership with South African firms Hydra Storage Holding and Reatile Renewables, the facility is designed to supply 75 megawatts of renewable electricity continuously to the national grid between 5:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. The output is contracted under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

TotalEnergies estimates the plant will generate 400 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to power approximately 200,000 households. Magali Pailhé, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Southern Africa, said the project strengthens South Africa's energy security while decarbonizing electricity generation.

Hydra Storage Holding, a joint venture partner, has previously delivered more than 1 gigawatt of large and medium-scale renewable projects across South Africa. The Hydra Project brings TotalEnergies' managed gross renewable power generation capacity to just under 36 gigawatts globally.

While currently the largest combined renewables and storage project in Africa, the Hydra Project may be surpassed by a planned complex along Egypt's Red Sea coast. That separate venture, involving Orascom Construction, Engie, and Toyota Tsusho, is slated to include 6,000 megawatts of solar, wind, and battery capacity.

Egypt also hosts the continent's largest standalone renewable generation site, the Benben Solar Park, which commissioned 1.8 gigawatts of solar capacity in 2019.

The Hydra Project addresses a key challenge for renewable integration by using battery storage to provide dispatchable power during peak demand hours, reducing reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants.

South Africa has faced recurring electricity supply constraints in recent years, making the addition of firm, clean capacity a significant operational milestone for the national grid.
